Liverpool boss Klopp wants to see women’s team kick on following promotion

Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp says that the women’s team’s promotion must be used as a springboard for future success.

The Reds won the FA Women’s Championship title with a 4-2 victory at Bristol City yesterday. Matt Beard’s side will now be playing in the top flight again next season after a two-year absence.

The contributing factors behind Liverpool’s relegation from the Barclays FA Women’s Super League in 2020 were well-documented and men’s boss Klopp says that the club must embrace their return to the top flight.

“In recent years, Liverpool have not been famous for dealing with their women’s team outstandingly well, they didn’t go down to the Championship for no reason,” Klopp admitted when speaking in a UEFA Champions League press conference. “Now they are back and now we have to make sure that we use the situation.

“I’ve met a lot of the girls in the last two or three months for various reasons and it’s really nice, they are a wonderful team, they have a great coach and I am really happy for them to get promoted.”

Klopp went on to explain that he has been following the achievements of the girls closely in recent weeks and he even punched the air with delight when initially asked about their title win.

He said “I sent messages yesterday and I was really happy (to see them win promotion). I have always been looking at their results around our games and obviously after last week’s result, I knew that they could win the title at Bristol with a draw but they won.

“I am really happy for them and for Matt (Beard), it’s a big thing.”

Liverpool will return to action after the international break with a home fixture against Sheffield United before they end the season at Lewes.
