Arsenal defender Leah Williamson has been named England’s captain for the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022.
The 25-year-old has predominantly held the armband since head coach Sarina Wiegman took up her position in September last year. Manchester City defender Steph Houghton was initially set to hold the armband but an injury on the eve of the North Macedonia game in Southampton saw Williamson given the leadership.
The centre-back has thrived as England captain and she has impressed head coach Wiegman enough to be given the role for this summer’s home EUROs.
The Football Association announced the news via an official press release this afternoon. Chelsea’s Millie Bright will be vice-captain while Ellen White will be third in-line.
Speaking following the announcement, Williamson said “This is an incredibly proud moment for me and my family and I am honoured to be asked to lead us at the EUROs.
“Steph Houghton is one of this country’s all-time greats and to follow in her footsteps – and all of those special names who have led the team in the past – means so much.
“Although I will be wearing the armband, I know we have a squad full of leaders who share my pride and passion in playing for our country. Whether I am captain or not, I will never take anything for granted and will always do my best for England every time I pull on the shirt.”
Williamson and England return to action on Friday evening when they face North Macedonia in a FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023 qualifier in Skopje.
