Illness brings Arsenal defender Patten’s loan spell at Aston Villa to a premature end

Arsenal defender Anna Patten’s loan spell at Aston Villa has come to an early end with the player suffering from glandular fever.

The 22-year-old joined The Villans in January on a loan deal until the end of the season but she will play no further part due to her ongoing illness.

Aston Villa took a number of medical opinions on whether Patten would feature for the club again before the end of the campaign but The Villans have today confirmed that the defender’s season is over.

Patten is highly-rated by parent club Arsenal but she was allowed to join Aston Villa on a half-season loan with Gunners boss Jonas Eidevall keen to see the youngster develop at centre-half. Patten has made eight appearances in all competitions for Aston Villa, helping the club to record important victories at Leicester City and Everton. Despite being on the losing side on six occasions, Patten helped Aston Villa become more defensively resolute and the club were often defeated by just the single goal.

With three games to go, the challenge for Aston Villa is to finish as high as they possibly can in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League. They must look to achieve that without Patten’s services as they have done in the last few weeks.
