Durham sign Lewes goalkeeper Saunders

Durham have confirmed their second signing of the day with the arrival of goalkeeper Tatiana Saunders from Lewes.

FAWSL Full-Time were informed of the news via an official club press release a short time ago. The announcement comes fresh off the back of the signing of former Sheffield United defender Georgia Robert.

Saunders grew up across the pond in New York but due to her family being from the Lake District, she opted to represent England at youth level whilst still studying in the United States. The Dartmouth University graduate will embark on a post-graduate degree with Durham University as part of the club’s masters scholarship programme.

The 28-year-old made 26 appearances in two seasons for former club Lewes before swapping the red and black for the blue of Durham.

Prior to her move to Lewes, Saunders had spells in Iceland with Fimleikafélag Hafnarfjarðar and Íþróttafélag Reykjavíkur and in France with Croix de Savoie and Thonon Evian Grand Genève FC.

After completing her move to Durham, Saunders said “It’s amazing to be here and I’m so excited.

“I’ve played against Durham and they’ve always been a really strong squad. We’ve always hated to play them because we know they’ve been physical, tough and skilful.

“I know how much potential the club has and I’m excited to be part of it.

“It’s great to be part of a club that values academic prestige and athletic prestige.”

Robert and Saunders are Durham head coach Lee Sanders’ first signings of the summer window but we can expect many more to come as The Wildcats look to strengthen ahead of the new season.
