Everton defender Sevecke believes that Denmark can defy the odds and reach quarter-finals

Everton defender Rikke Sevecke believes that Denmark are more than capable of beating Spain in their crucial third Group B match at the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022.

The Danes, who finished as runners-up at the UEFA Women’s EURO in 2017, know that they must win at the Brentford Community Stadium on Saturday if they are to progress to the knockout rounds of this summer’s tournament.

Having played every minute for Lars Søndergaard’s side so far, Sevecke is optimistic that she and her teammates can deliver the result they require.

“I’m sure if we play as well as we know we can and try to stop Spain from scoring then it will be a positive day for us,” she said when speaking to FAWSL Full-Time.

“Spain are really good on the ball and they are very technical, so we just need to be really good in the defence and hopefully, we’ll get some chances ourselves.

“Hopefully, we can get all three points because that’s what we need to get through.”

After suffering a heavy 4-0 defeat to Germany in their opening game of the tournament, Denmark edged past Finland at Stadium MK on Tuesday to keep their qualification hopes alive. Chelsea’s Pernille Harder scored the only goal of the game to seal all three points, and Sevecke revealed how pleasing it was for the team to secure their first victory and clean sheet.

She said “Obviously, we were very positive and happy to get the win. We needed the win so it was very important and it kind of lifted the mood a little bit.

“As a defender, I always want to keep a clean sheet. After the Germany game, I think we were a little bit hit, and we just needed a win, but a clean sheet was a really nice bonus.”

While facing the media at Kingsmeadow, Sevecke also discussed her thoughts on the overall tournament so far, explaining that she has enjoyed watching some matches, including one involving holders the Netherlands.

She said “I really liked the Sweden-Holland game, I thought it was very exciting. It was a more competitive game, and you got to see both teams in a really good way. Every team at the EUROs are in it to win it, and that’s what we’re going for as well.

“Right now, the focus is just to get out of the group and go to the quarter-finals.”

Denmark’s final UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 group match against Spain kicks-off at 8pm on Saturday evening.
