Southampton forward Katie Wilkinson says that she is excited to experience the magic of playing her football at St Mary’s Stadium this season.
The 27-year-old is The Saints’ marquee signing of the summer transfer window and she is in-line to make her competitive debut for the club in their opening match of the season against Charlton Athletic this lunchtime.
Southampton are set to embark on their first campaign in the Barclays Women’s Championship after winning promotion to the second tier last season. The club have ambitious plans of reaching the Barclays Women’s Super League and they have taken the next steps towards that goal by turning full-time and staging their home matches at St Mary’s Stadium this season.
When speaking to FAWSL Full-Time ahead of the opening match of the season at St Mary’s, Southampton forward Wilkinson admitted that the opportunity to play at the club’s spiritual home is very special.
“It’s going to be magic playing each home game in front of the Saints fans at the home ground,” Wilkinson said. “To pick up points there and to score goals at that ground is going to be amazing and hopefully, we can do plenty of it.
“Seeing as many fans down there as possible is going to be great for us so hopefully, they’ll get behind us.”
Wilkinson will be expected to hit the goal trail for Southampton this season but she believes that she won’t be the only player finding the back of the net on a regular basis.
She said “The group is talented. I think the goals will be spread around the team this season because the group are technically gifted. The goals will be coming from all over the place because we’ve got some very talented players across the squad.
“I genuinely believe that this season we are going to play some exciting football and hopefully, we will shock a few women’s football fans.”
