Skinner wants Spurs to build on positive response when they take on Liverpool

Tottenham Hotspur head coach Rehanne Skinner wants her side to build some consistency from their recent victory over Reading when Liverpool provide the opposition at The Breyer Group Stadium in Leyton this afternoon.

Spurs bounced back from a heavy North London derby defeat to Arsenal with an FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup victory at Reading a fortnight ago.

When speaking in the pre-match press conference ahead of this afternoon’s fixture, Spurs boss Skinner demanded consistency from her side whilst adding that latest opponents Liverpool will look to make life difficult.

“Stepping into the league is difficult, I think we all know that,” Skinner said. “A top team from the Championship coming into the WSL still creates problems for the consistency. I had it myself when I was here, we weren’t consistent week in, week out when I first came to the club.

“It is always going to be a challenge. They’ve shown that they can get a result against a top team and then the next week, it was a bit different. Matt (Beard) has put together a hard-working team, they’re organised and they’ll try to make it as difficult as possible for us. We will have to be on top of our game and the most important thing is that we follow on from the positive response from the Reading game and the way we performed. We want to get some consistency ourselves.”

Tottenham Hotspur take on Liverpool in their first match at their new home of The Breyer Group Stadium in Leyton and Skinner is hoping to see the club’s local fanbase connect with their women’s team.

She said “We’ve had a really positive response, we’ve sold out our season tickets and it is a new partnership at Leyton Orient. The relationship with the community is going to take a little bit of time as we evolve, people need to become aware of where we are and what we are about. While it is closer to Tottenham, there is still a little bit of work to be done.

“We definitely had an improved following and raised our average attendance at the end of last year which was good. We are just trying to make sure that we get that right in this new ground. It’ll take a few games for us to get up to speed with that but we are certainly hoping to keep including everybody within the community and keep involving our fanbase in that particular area.”

Tottenham Hotspur’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture against Liverpool kicks-off at 2pm. Tickets remain on-sale and can be purchased from the Leyton Orient box office.
