Southampton confident ahead of latest match against Birmingham City says Parnell

Southampton defender Rosie Parnell says that the team are feeling confident ahead of this evening’s fixture against Birmingham City in Totton.

The Saints have been gradually easing their way into elite football following their promotion to the Barclays Women’s Championship in May. Marieanne Spacey-Cale’s side did suffer a setback last time out as they were defeated by struggling Coventry United in the FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup.

When speaking to FAWSL Full-Time ahead of this evening’s clash with Birmingham City, defender Parnell said that Southampton have plenty of confidence, especially given their recent results against good sides.

“We are really confident going into the Birmingham game despite our last result against Coventry,” Parnell said. “We are back onto the league now, back at home which is good for us because we’ve had a lot of away games.

“They are a really good side but we play better against the better sides it seems.”

Southampton are still searching for their first clean sheet in the elite game and Parnell went on to say that the team need to keep switched on to potential danger, particularly from set plays.

She said “We’ve learnt this season that you get punished if you switch off. Last season, we might have got away with it a bit more but this season, we have learnt that.

“While we have conceded goals, we have kept a good shape and teams have found it quite difficult to play through us, a lot of our goals conceded have come from set pieces.”
