Beard hails Liverpool’s work ethic and commitment ahead of Aston Villa fixture

Liverpool manager Matt Beard says that he has been delighted with his side’s work ethic and commitment levels in the early stages of this season.

The Reds have collected three points from an available 15 so far with the club still finding their feet following their promotion from the Barclays Women’s Championship.

Liverpool have had a tough run of fixtures but they have performed well against all of the top sides which they have faced. When speaking ahead of this afternoon’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture against Aston Villa, Beard hailed his side’s efforts so far, despite not always getting their rewards.

“The mood in the camp is fantastic and it always has been,” Beard said. “We knew when we set our targets for the first half of the season, knowing the fixtures that we had in the first six games, that it was going to be tough. I do feel that we could have been a few more points better off but that’s not how it has panned out for us.

“We are in good spirits here. I think you can see how hard they are working and their commitment levels, you look at the Arsenal game and how we kept going and likewise, against Manchester City when they went 2-1 up. We can take a lot of heart and confidence from these first six games and we know that a big six to eight-week period is ahead.”

Going on to discuss this afternoon’s opponents Aston Villa, Beard said that he can see similarities in where the two clubs are at the current time.

He said “They’ve got a lot of pace in their team and I know a lot of their players from my time at West Ham. They’re a good team, they are finding their feet after making a lot of changes in the summer both with the playing personnel and with their technical staff.

“They’re finding their feet at the moment but they press well, they put you under pressure so we are prepared for that. A lot of teams have been doing that to us anyway and I feel as though we are getting better with that as time has gone on.

“It is going to be a tough game, they never give up and are similar to us in their performance levels. They’ve been a little bit unlucky with some of the games that they have lost but when you are trying to get things to gel, it takes a little bit of time.”
