Chelsea are into the FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup semi-finals as a result of a 3-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in their quarter-final tie at The Breyer Group Stadium this evening.
The game survived a 2pm pitch inspection with the surface no longer deemed to be frozen. There was nothing cold about Chelsea’s performance this evening with The Blues overcoming a Tottenham Hotspur side which included their former forward Beth England.
Spurs started brightly and Celin Bizet Ildhusøy forced a save from visiting keeper Zećira Mušović early in the match.
Chelsea warmed to the task but they had to be patient for opportunities to come their way. Lauren James fired an effort wide before The Blues broke the deadlock seven minutes before half-time when Erin Cuthbert’s shot hit Sam Kerr before finding the back of the Spurs net.
Spurs went close after the restart when Bizet played in former Chelsea midfielder Drew Spence but she failed to take full advantage, Mušović being left untroubled in the visitors’ goal.
Chelsea then doubled their lead in the 68th minute when Fran Kirby impressively curled the ball home from a James pass.
The Blues netted a third goal late in the game. Kerr completed her brace by prodding the ball beyond Spurs keeper Tinja-Riikka Korpela.
The hosts grabbed a consolation deep in second half injury time through a long range Spence strike as they clawed back a little bit of London derby pride but it was too little, too late.
Chelsea join Manchester City and West Ham United in the FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup semi-final draw.
