Tottenham Hotspur have put an end to a nine-match losing run in the Barclays Women’s Super League with a 1-0 victory over Leicester City at The Breyer Group Stadium this evening.
As a result of their poor form, The Lilywhites sacked head coach Rehanne Skinner on Monday. Interim head coach Vicky Jepson got a response from the players this evening with Spurs showing the necessary grit to see-off an improving Leicester City outfit in Leyton.
Leicester City enjoyed the majority of the possession of the ball in the opening stages but Spurs were more purposeful going forward. Rosella Ayane caused problems for the visiting defence midway through the first half, putting in a dangerous cross for Nikola Karczewska before forcing a save from Leicester City keeper Janina Leitzig herself. Eveliina Summanen also went close for Spurs in the opening 45 minutes but she glanced her header wide of goal.
The visitors were more lively early in the second half and Hannah Cain forced a good save from Spurs keeper Tinja-Riikka Korpela before The Foxes hit the bar from a corner kick.
Leicester City were made to rue those missed opportunities moments later as Spurs broke the deadlock. Beth England justified her hefty price tag with a clinical finish into the top corner of the net.
The Lilywhites sat comfortably on their lead and they had a couple of chances to extend their advantage with Kit Graham and Celin Bizet Ildhusøy trying their luck. Spurs were unable to net a second goal but it didn’t matter one bit as they hung onto their 1-0 lead, along with a hugely important three points.
Tonight’s victory lifts Spurs five points clear of Leicester City who remain rock bottom of the Barclays Women’s Super League table.
