Arsenal legend Smith handed short-term coaching role

Arsenal legend Kelly Smith MBE has taken up a first team coaching role with the club on a short-term basis.

The Gunners announced the news via a post on their official club Twitter account this afternoon.

Smith has agreed to work as a member of Arsenal head coach Jonas Eidevall’s coaching team until the end of the season. She links-up with the first team squad ahead of their UEFA Women’s Champions League semi-final, second leg tie against German club VfL Wolfsburg at the Emirates Stadium on Monday evening.

As a player, Smith enjoyed three successful spells with Arsenal between 1996 and 1997, 2005 and 2009 and 2012 and 2017. The former England international won five league titles, five Women’s FA Cups, three FA Women’s Community Shields, one FA Women’s Premier League Cup and the UEFA Women’s Cup with The Gunners. Smith is seen as a true legend of the game both for club and country. Her contribution to the Barclays Women’s Super League was recognised when she was entered into the 2021 WSL Hall of Fame.

There is no doubting the fact that Smith will make an excellent coach and her upcoming experiences with the Arsenal first team will give her a good grounding for future challenges.
