Arsenal have confirmed that defender Laura Wienroither sustained an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury in the club’s UEFA Women’s Champions League semi-final, second leg tie against VfL Wolfsburg at the Emirates Stadium on Monday evening.
The Gunners announced the news via an update on their official club website this morning.
Wienroither sustained the injury in the 82nd minute of the match and had to be replaced by Kathrine Kühl. The player’s injury has now been assessed by the Arsenal medical team and it has been confirmed that Wienroither has ruptured her Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL). The Austrian international is expected to be sidelined for around nine months and she will now begin her rehabilitation.
The defender is the fourth Arsenal player to sustain an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury this season. Forwards Beth Mead and Vivianne Miedema both sustained that type of injury during the first half of the season while defender Leah Williamson ruptured her Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) in a fixture against Manchester United last month.
Long-term injuries are reaping havoc with the Arsenal squad and the club face a real challenge to ensure that they maintain their title push in this season’s Barclays Women’s Super League. The Gunners face struggling Leicester City in their next match at the LV Bet Stadium on Friday evening.
