England head coach Sarina Wiegman said that she was proud of her side after they qualified for a first-ever FIFA Women’s World Cup final.
The Lionesses defeated tournament co-hosts Australia 3-1 in Sydney earlier today and they will now take on Spain for the right to become world champions.
England have adapted to every challenge that has been thrown at them at this summer’s FIFA Women’s World Cup and head coach Wiegman said that she was proud of the team for their incredible achievement.
“I can hardly describe how proud I am of the team because this team have adapted all the time,” Wiegman said when speaking in the post-match press conference.
“Before the tournament and now in this game, how we found a way to win and come through again is so incredible.
“I am really proud of them.”
Sunday’s FIFA Women’s World Cup final is England boss Wiegman’s fourth consecutive major tournament final appearance. She said that the latest final will be every bit as special as the previous three and that the hard work for Spain begins tomorrow.
She said “I really appreciate it. When I made the first final in 2017, I thought that it was really special and it might not ever happen again and then you make the second final, the third and then the fourth. You still think that it might never happen again because the competition is so hard and there are so many teams that can win the final, so it is very special.
“Tomorrow, I am just going to start preparing for Spain because we want to win the final.”
England have put on a whole range of varied performances throughout the tournament but Wiegman said that the team’s standards never slip.
“I have only known this team to demand high standards from each other and from themselves,” Wiegman said. “The commitment of this team, the willingness to get better is so high. I have never seen any different, there is never any complacency in this team.
“We have had a lot of things thrown at us with injuries and trying to work out the best way to play. We have found our style and everyone feels comfortable, the players that come on feel comfortable too.”
The FIFA Women’s World Cup final between Spain and England kicks-off at 11am on Sunday morning.
