‘We want to be in the WSL’ – London City Lionesses aiming for promotion says Brougham

London City Lionesses defender Georgia Brougham says that while some people will underestimate the club going into the new season, the ultimate aim is to win promotion to the Barclays Women’s Super League.

It has been a summer of change at Princes Park. Carolina Morace has come in as the club’s new head coach while there has been major changes in the playing staff.

London City Lionesses are a bit of an unknown quantity going into the new season but defender Brougham says that promotion is the only internal target.

“I think we’ve signed some great players,” Brougham said when speaking exclusively to FAWSL Full-Time. “People might underestimate us but we know collectively what we’ve set out for the season, we can go out and compete.

“We want to be in the WSL and compete with the likes of my former club Leicester and the other teams that have gone up.””

The number of new arrivals at Princes Park has gone well into double figures. London City Lionesses’ new-look team may need time to gel but Brougham believes that the club are in a good place.

She said “When you get so many new players, it is going to take time to gel but I think if we keep repeating the same things in training and we are all on the same page, we could gel quite quickly.

“The girls have been really welcoming and it is coming together nicely.”

London City Lionesses make the long trip to Sunderland on opening day before having the benefit of back-to-back home games against Watford and Reading. Brougham highlighted the importance of a good start to the season.

“Obviously, you want to get points on the board straight away and you want to get off to a good start,” the defender said.

“We’ve looked at the first few fixtures, especially the two home games and we want to make Princes Park a scary place for teams to come and play.

“Hopefully, we get off to a good start and climb the table as quickly as possible.”

London City Lionesses’ opening fixture of the 2023/2024 Barclays Women’s Championship season at Sunderland kicks-off at 1pm on Sunday.
