Sheffield United manager Jonathan Morgan said that he was delighted with the point taken from a 1-1 draw at Charlton Athletic yesterday.
The Blades were a goal down for most of the game at The Valley after Kayleigh Green had given the hosts an early lead, however, they applied pressure in the second half and levelled matters in injury time through a stunning long range strike from Bex Rayner.
When speaking to the media after the match, Morgan admitted that he was delighted to come away from South East London with a point.
“We did really well,” Morgan said. “I think the first 10 minutes, Charlton came out and were really positive, really lively and they had the better of the game. We’ve made a lot of new signings and changed our system a bit so once things settled down, we started to take a bit of a foothold with the types of chances that were created. I think we could’ve gone into half-time 2-1 up.
“In the second half, Charlton started brightly again and got a lot of success in the first 10-15 minutes down the sides but we put in some resolute, last-ditch defending. After that, it almost turned into a basketball game; we had nothing to lose and Charlton had the lead to hold onto.
“They were on the ropes but we couldn’t quite see where the goal was going to come from because Sian Rogers had a great game. Thankfully, Bex Rayner stepped up and you could see from the celebrations, it’s a big point for us.”
Given the form of home keeper Rogers, it looked like the hosts were going to take all three points, however, you always felt that there could be a very late twist given the pressure that Sheffield United piled on. Morgan said that he did think that something would give even though Charlton Athletic had survived waves of pressure.
He said “You get to the point where you wonder whether it’s going to be your day with the chances that you’ve missed but we maintained a very high level of pressure on Charlton. From that point of view, we knew that something was going to give. The fact it was a worldie just made it that little bit better for us.”
Sheffield United are back at Bramall Lane this weekend when they face Sunderland in their second match of the new Barclays Women’s Championship season.
