Manchester City head coach Gareth Taylor says that good home form will again be hugely important for his side this season.
The Cityzens face Chelsea in their first home fixture of the season at the newly-named Joie Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Manchester City are unbeaten in 19 home league matches. When speaking in the pre-match press conference, head coach Taylor said that the continuation of his side’s good home form will be important this season.
“Yeah, of course, it’s important,” Taylor said. “It’s our home ground and we really utilise the support that we have here. The fans are amazing with us and they enjoy what we’ve been trying to achieve over the last few years. I think to go unbeaten like we did last season is no mean feat given the ever-increasing WSL standard.
“Also, I think every game is important home and away. Our away form has been really good in the last few years as well. It was a tough game last week in terms of it being the first game away from home. You always want to start at home but I felt the performance we put on was top draw. Everyone really contributed well to a good team performance.”
This weekend’s opponents Chelsea have held the Barclays Women’s Super League title since the 2019/2020 season. Taylor sees similarities in the two clubs’ projects and he believes that his Manchester City side are on the right track for success.
He said “They recruit good players, they have continuity with staff and with the players, so I think that helps. There is good support there for everything that they need and you have seen what that can bring.
“It’s been really apparent having Emma [Hayes] in that position for a long time, having the nucleus of the same team while also bringing in world-class players as well to compliment that.
“Nothing changes in our objective, we’re very similar in that space. I think we’re probably at a different part of that cycle if you like but it’s one where we can see a similar destination. That’s got to be the aim for a club like this and it certainly is. Everyone is right behind that, we’re looking forward to that journey.”
Manchester City’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture against Chelsea kicks-off at 12.30pm on Sunday afternoon. The match has been declared a sell-out.
