Leicester City make it two wins from two with victory over Everton

Leicester City have made it two wins from two in this season’s Barclays Women’s Super League after defeating Everton 1-0 at The King Power Stadium this afternoon.

A relatively even contest in the East Midlands was settled by a second half goal from Leicester City striker Lena Petermann.

It was Everton who went close to breaking the deadlock in the second minute when Martina Piemonte took aim from distance but Janina Leitzig made an impressive save.

At the other end, Petermann dispossessed visiting keeper Emily Ramsey before scuffing her shot wide. England international keeper Ramsey looked shaky in the opening stages of the match, gifting possession to the hosts on a couple of occasions. She did show some confidence in palming a looping ball off the line soon after her individual errors.

The final 25 minutes of the first half produced very little in the way of quality goalscoring opportunities until the clock ticked into added time. Leicester City captain Aileen Whelan caught Piemonte in the box and the referee pointed to the penalty spot. Justine Vanhaevermaet stepped up to take the spot kick but Leitzig came out on top, saving both the penalty and the follow up.

Leitzig again excelled early in the second half. Emma Bissell found herself one-on-one with the keeper but the German made the block. She then kept out a Lucy Hope effort, although the shot could have been much better.

Leicester City looked like they hadn’t come out of the dressing room in the early stages of the second half and Piemonte was the next player to miss a big chance, she shot wide from just six yards out.

Willie Kirk opted to bring on Hannah Cain just after the hour in a bid to reignite his side’s spark. She delivered a cross onto the head of Missy Goodwin but Ramsey was able to claim the ball.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 68th minute. Sam Tierney played a neat pass through to Petermann and she nudged the ball beyond Ramsey and into the Everton net.

The visitors threw plenty at Leicester City in the closing stages and they thought that Emma Bissell had levelled matters six minutes from time but the flag went up for offside, capping off a frustrating afternoon for Brian Sørensen’s side.

Leicester City end the afternoon top of the table on six points while Everton are yet to get off the mark this season.
