Liverpool must learn from negative derby moments says Beard

Liverpool manager Matt Beard says that his side must learn from their Merseyside derby mistakes when they travel to West Ham United this afternoon.

The Reds will be looking to bounce back from a 1-0 defeat to Merseyside rivals Everton at Anfield last weekend.

Liverpool won their first two Barclays Women’s Super League matches this season but victory over Everton proved to be a step too far, although there were bright moments for The Reds. Manager Beard says that Liverpool are happy with their start to the season, although they must learn from last weekend’s failings.

“If you look on paper at the fixtures that we had, I think for sure (we would have taken it),” Beard said when speaking in a Liverpool press conference. “Even in the debrief on Wednesday, we said if we were offered seven or nine points from the first four games, you would probably take it given the start that we’ve had.

“We’ve had a good start to the season. Last Sunday was frustrating but sometimes you learn more from losing games than winning games. We need to draw on some of the negative moments from last Sunday and make sure that they don’t happen again.

“For the most part, I can’t fault what the girls have done so far this year.”

Going on to discuss the challenge of West Ham United, Beard said that he expects his team to come up against a very organised Hammers side in East London.

He said “I think that Rick Passmoor was a really good signing for them, Rick did a great job at Notts County. They’ve got two really good, experienced coaches working with the team.

“I think they are really organised, you can see the structure and they’re dangerous on set plays. The organisation is the biggest thing, I think they lacked that under Paul (Konchesky) last year.

“Defensively, they are very organised and they’ve got set patterns of play, so it’s going to be tough to break them down. We’ve worked on ways of trying to do that this week but I’ve been impressed with what they’ve done so far.”

Liverpool’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at West Ham United kicks-off at 3pm.
