Bristol City looking to grow performances says head coach Smith

Bristol City head coach Lauren Smith says that her side will continue to build their performances in the hope that points will follow.

The Robins have lost all four of their matches upon their return to the Barclays Women’s Super League. Smith’s side travel to West Ham United for their latest fixture on Sunday.

Despite their losing start, Bristol City have improved with each game. When speaking to the media ahead of the trip to West Ham United, head coach Smith said that the target is for Bristol City to keep on building in the hope that results will come.

“It’s an opportunity,” Smith said when discussing her side’s latest challenge. “Looking back at the first four games, our performances got better without the ball. Looking between the Manchester City and Arsenal games, if we can start to build on the whole of the game plan and see improvements week-to-week, I’d hope that we get some stability and our performances grow.

“If the performances grow, you’d hope that results follow, although that’s not always the case. We will certainly be looking to build and hope that it manages to get some points on the board.”

Smith went on to say that the Bristol City players are not getting too down about the club’s current ranking. The atmosphere in the camp is very strong going into the game at the weekend.

She said “The players are really excited. This is the first day that they’ve all been back together since returning from the international window and they love it; they’re full of energy, they’re excited and they’re looking forward to the challenge of West Ham. There’s quite a good buzz around the place right now.”

Bristol City’s latest opponents West Ham United have taken four points from four games so far. Even though The Hammers haven’t overly impressed in the opening weeks of the season, Smith knows that the East Londoners can be very dangerous.

“We played them in pre-season and they got in-behind us a few times, scored from crosses and they looked clinical,” Smith said. “They’ve got some really strong players in their starting XI that can cause problems and are technical.

“They look really strong. They probably haven’t had all of the results that they wanted just now, but they’re probably looking to build on what they have got across the last set of games.”

Bristol City’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at West Ham United kicks-off at 3pm on Sunday afternoon.
