Manchester City head coach Gareth Taylor wants his side to build on their derby victory over Manchester United when they face Leicester City in the FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup at The Academy Stadium on Wednesday evening.
The Cityzens defeated The Red Devils 3-1 at Old Trafford yesterday, a result that has got Manchester City’s season back on track after consecutive defeats.
Manchester City’s next fixture is against Leicester City in the FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup. The Cityzens have won both of their matches in the competition so far this season and another victory would surely leave them on the verge of qualification for the quarter-finals with a game against Manchester United to spare.
When speaking in the pre-match press conference, head coach Taylor said that he wants his side to take forward their momentum from the win at Old Trafford and get their FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup business done.
“You don’t know what’s enough but you’d like to think nine points is a good tally to have with a game to play against United in the new year,” Taylor said.
“We want to make sure our business is done properly this end. It’s not going to be easy, we expect Leicester to come out and engage but the girls trained today and looked good and up for it.
“We need to continue from where we left off against United with that attitude, confidence and endeavour that we’ve taken from that result last night.”
Manchester City recently defeated latest opponents Leicester City 1-0 at The King Power Stadium in the Barclays Women’s Super League. Taylor expects The Foxes to adopt a similar game plan on Wednesday evening and his players are prepared for the challenge.
He said “I don’t expect them to do anything different from what we have seen previously which has got them some success but you never know. They have the capacity to do a couple of things if they come out and engage and are brave in their pressing, so we have to be aware of that.
“The last game at The King Power was a positive for us in terms of the result. We know that we should have put them to bed a bit earlier than we did.
“It’s just about being aware of their dangers and their threats. This competition doesn’t give you many chances, so it’s important that we don’t take the game lightly. It’s a home game which is great and we understand the importance of it. If we can get nine points on the board, that gives us a really strong chance of progressing.”
