The 2019/2020 Barclays FA Women’s Super League and FA Women’s Championship seasons are over with clubs having voted in favour of a termination due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic.
The Football Association confirmed the decision in an official statement which was issued to FA Women’s Super League Full-Time this afternoon.
The decision to end the current campaign comes more than two months after the Barclays FA Women’s Super League and FA Women’s Championship were initially suspended. The competitions were suspended on safety grounds in-line with many other football leagues both at home and across Europe with the rate of Coronavirus infection on the increase.
It is understood that The Football Association have been in talks with representatives from all Barclays FA Women’s Super League and FA Women’s Championship clubs on a regular basis as all parties have looked to agree on plan on how the 2019/2020 season should be brought to a conclusion. The decision has now been made to bring an end to the campaign, allowing clubs to plan for next season.

It’s sad it was not possible to complete the WSL and FAWC seasons, but it was the right decision for the safety of everyone involved. It will be interesting to see how promotion, relegation and Champion’s League issues are resolved.

The FA Board are currently considering a proposal regarding outstanding matters such as qualification for next season’s UEFA Women’s Champions League and a further update will be provided by The Football Association in due course.
