Crystal Palace full-back Gibbons to retire

Crystal Palace full-back Fliss Gibbons will retire at the end of the current season.

The Eagles announced the news via a post on their official club website this afternoon.

The 30-year-old has enjoyed a senior playing career that has spanned for one-and-a-half decades. Gibbons started out with Charlton Athletic before going on to feature for Watford and Gillingham. Spells with Brighton & Hove Albion and Millwall Lionesses followed before the defender returned to Gillingham for a second spell. Gibbons then re-signed for Brighton & Hove Albion before joining latest club Crystal Palace in 2022. Gibbons was a Barclays Women’s Championship title-winner with The Eagles last term.

After her retirement was announced, Gibbons said “I’ve made a lot of good friends since I’ve been at Palace, hopefully, we’ll now stay friends long after all our careers end. I’ve been really lucky to be surrounded by good people. Obviously, great players, but I think good people, we look out for each other in the good and the bad times. I’ve definitely been fortunate with the group that we’ve had here [I’ve got] teammates that have become good friends. I’m very grateful.”

Gibbons will hope to end her professional playing career by helping Crystal Palace to secure Barclays Women’s Super League safety in the final weeks of the season.
