Chelsea reach another League Cup final after defeating Manchester City

Chelsea are into another Subway Women’s League Cup final after defeating Manchester City 1-0 in their semi-final tie at The Joie Stadium this evening.

Wieke Kaptein netted the game’s only goal late in the first half as the trophy holders marched on.

Sandy Baltimore registered the first real shot of the game for Chelsea, but her effort was deflected wide by Kerstin Casparij.

At the other end, Khadija Shaw and Vivianne Miedema worked perfectly together to create an opportunity for Manchester City but the ball rolled to visiting keeper Hannah Hampton.

Shaw then somehow managed to miss an open goal after rounding Hampton. Baltimore did well to get back and prevent the Jamaican international from taking advantage.

Baltimore was having a good game and she sent a ball across the box to Sam Kerr, but her header flashed just wide of the goal.

All of Chelsea’s hard work paid off in the 41st minute as they finally got their goal through Kaptein. Baltimore swung a cross in from the right and Kaptein was left unmarked to head the ball past Ayaka Yamashita.

Manchester City responded and the ball fell to Miedema outside of the area but her shot hit the post before teammate Casparij suffered the same fate.

The Cityzens continued to push hard and Casparij clipped in a cross, but Miedema couldn’t get her header on target. Shaw then managed to meet a Lauren Hemp cross but her header was pushed over the bar by Hampton. Yui Hasegawa then had an attempt, but Hampton again came to Chelsea’s rescue.

Baltimore attempted to double Chelsea’s lead late on but she curled the ball towards Yamashita as the game ended 1-0.

Chelsea will face Manchester United in this season’s Subway Women’s League Cup final on Sunday 15 March 2026.
