Brighton & Hove Albion record impressive victory against league leaders Manchester City

Brighton & Hove Albion caused an upset as they recorded an impressive 3-2 victory over Barclays Women’s Super League leaders Manchester City at Broadfield Stadium this afternoon.

The hosts took the win thanks to a brace from Madison Haley along with a goal from Kiko Seike.

Early pressure from Manchester City resulted in them going close in the opening minutes through Aoba Fujino. Her shot from the centre of the box went just wide of Chiamaka Nnadozie’s goal.

Kerolin opened the scoring in the fifth minute with a right-footed shot into the top left corner of the Brighton & Hove Albion net.

Khadija Shaw then hit the post as Manchester City looked to extend their early lead while Brighton & Hove Albion’s first shot of the game came when Fran Kirby’s effort was saved by Ayaka Yamashita.

Just before the break, Kerolin’s shot from the centre of the box was saved by Nnadozie.

Brighton & Hove Albion equalised in added time through Haley’s right-footed shot from the centre of the box. She was assisted by Kirby.

Just moments after the break, Seike put the hosts ahead as her shot from a difficult angle found the top corner.

At the other end, Nnadozie made another crucial save to deny Fujino and keep her side ahead.

Brighton & Hove Albion then added a third goal through Haley as her close-range shot beat Yamashita after her first chance was saved.

Towards the end of regular time, Shaw got one back for the visitors as her right-footed shot went past Nnadozie but it was too little, too late as Manchester City’s title hopes suffered a blow.

Brighton & Hove Albion are back in action when they travel to face Manchester United next Saturday while Manchester City host Liverpool the following day.
