Sunderland sign London City Lionesses forward Franssi on loan

Sunderland have completed the signing of London City Lionesses forward Sanni Franssi on a season-long loan deal.

The Lady Black Cats announced the news via a post on their official club website this evening.

The 31-year-old attacker joined London City Lionesses from Spanish side Real Sociedad last summer. Franssi made 18 appearances for The Pride in the Barclays Women’s Super League in 2025/2026.

Franssi has enjoyed a long career at the top level. In addition to her spells in Spain and England, she has also played in her native Finland, Switzerland, Italy and Denmark. She has won league titles with PK-35 Vantaa, Juventus and Fortuna Hjørring.

On the international stage, Franssi has been capped by Finland on 101 occasions in which she has scored seven goals. She is just eight caps away from appearing on her nation’s top 10 appearance-holder list.

After joining Sunderland, Franssi said “I am very excited to sign for Sunderland. I am so excited to get started and see what is to come. It is an ambitious project but one that will be great to be a part of. We will take it one step at a time. Everything feels right here.”

Franssi is Sunderland’s fifth signing of the summer transfer window.
