Former Bristol City forward joins Charlton Athletic

Charlton Athletic manager Riteesh Mishra has added former Bristol City forward Ella Rutherford to his squad on the eve of the new FA Women’s Championship season according to reports on The Addicks’ official website.

The 20-year-old England youth international has spent the last two years with the Barclays FA Women’s Super League club but found her opportunities limited last season, resulting in loan spells with both Crystal Palace and Leicester City.

Rutherford left The Robins at the end of last season and is now understood to have signed a one-year contract with Charlton Athletic ahead of their 2020/2021 FA Women’s Championship season opener against her former club Crystal Palace at The Oakwood tomorrow afternoon.

In her first season at Bristol City, Rutherford featured in all 20 of her side’s matches in the top flight. She netted two goals in victories over Merseyside pair Liverpool and Everton.

Last season saw Rutherford feature for both of her loan clubs in FA Women’s Championship fixtures against Charlton Athletic and she clearly made an impression upon The Addicks boss Mishra who has swooped to secure her services for the upcoming campaign.

Charlton Athletic are bidding for a much-improved campaign this year following a winless 2019/2020 which saw them finish bottom of the FA Women’s Championship.
