Blackburn Rovers have completed the signing of Manchester United’s teenage forward Maria Edwards on a loan deal until the end of the 2020/2021 season according to reports on Rovers’ official club website.
The 17-year-old striker was named in Casey Stoney’s senior squad on a couple of occasions last season, being an unused substitute for the Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixtures against Arsenal and Liverpool at The Leigh Sports Village.
Edwards was formerly on the books of Manchester United’s rivals on the blue side of the city before changing her allegiances. The youngster has made one senior appearance in a United shirt in a pre-season friendly fixture in Norway back in August 2019 ahead of the club’s debut campaign in the top flight.
The player joins fellow Red Devil Charlotte Newsham at Blackburn Rovers and she has been handed the number 15 shirt by the FA Women’s Championship club.
Edwards is tipped to be a future talent for the England team. The player has already represented the nation up to Under-17 level and she was the joint-top scorer for The Young Lionesses in their qualification campaign for the 2020 UEFA European Women’s Under-17 Championship, a tournament which was cancelled due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
It is unknown whether Edwards could make her Rovers debut in their FA Women’s Continental League Cup fixture against Birmingham City at The Sir Tom Finney Stadium this evening.
