Manchester United forward handed senior debut by loan club Blackburn Rovers

Manchester United forward Maria Edwards made her senior debut last night as loan club Blackburn Rovers were defeated 1-0 by Birmingham City in their first FA Women’s Continental League Cup group match.

The teenager was unveiled by Rovers before the match after joining the club on loan from the Barclays FA Women’s Super League side and manager Gemma Donnelly immediately named Edwards on the bench.

Edwards was brought on for her senior footballing debut in the 56th minute of the match, on a night which saw Rovers narrowly beaten by tier one opposition. The player didn’t really have an opportunity to net a first senior goal with second half chances at a premium.

The only goal of the game came eight minutes from time when Claudia Walker found herself one-on-one with Rovers keeper Alex Brooks and she coolly slotted the ball home.

Young striker Edwards is yet to make a competitive appearance for the Manchester United first team. She has previously represented the club in pre-season friendly matches while she was twice named amongst the substitutes for Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixtures last season but remained unused.

The player will spend the remainder of the season on loan with FA Women’s Championship club Blackburn Rovers.
