Aston Villa’s fixtures against Bristol City and Chelsea postponed due to Covid-19

Aston Villa’s next two fixtures against Bristol City and Chelsea in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League have been postponed due to a member of their first team squad having tested positive for Covid-19.

Several other members of the squad are understood to also be in isolation in a bid to contain the virus.

Villa were in action as recently as Wednesday evening as they took on Sheffield United in the FA Women’s Continental League Cup. Gemma Davies’ side won their opening group match 1-0 at The Banks’s Stadium. They also faced Everton at the same venue last Saturday. No reference to opposition players being asked to self-isolate has been made at this stage.

An official statement on Aston Villa’s club website this morning read:

‘Aston Villa Women can confirm that a member of our first-team squad has tested positive for COVID-19.

Several other members of the squad will also enter a period of self-isolation.

Due to these developments, we have since agreed with the FA to postpone our next two fixtures, against Bristol City (October 11th) and Chelsea (October 17th).

Aston Villa’s main priority is the health and safety of our players, staff, and opponents.’

Davies’ side were set to travel to Bristol City on Sunday for what was going to be a huge battle at the bottom of the Barclays FA Women’s Super League. Chelsea were Villa’s next scheduled opponents at The Banks’s Stadium a week on Saturday but both of those games will now be rescheduled later in the season.
