London City Lionesses head coach calls on her side to frustrate Arsenal

London City Lionesses head coach Melissa Phillips has called on her side to frustrate Arsenal when the pair meet at Princes Park in the group stage of the FA Women’s Continental League Cup this evening.

The Gunners have made a habit of netting goals by the bucketload against many of their opponents this season and second tier side London City Lionesses are the latest club to face the near-impossible task of keeping the Arsenal attack quiet.

Speaking to FA Women’s Super League Full-Time ahead of the FA Women’s Continental League Cup clash this evening, London City Lionesses boss Phillips has called for her side to be difficult opponents for the visitors.

“We will prepare ourselves for their attacking threats” Phillips said. “Something that we speak about a lot in training and in team meetings is about being difficult to break down and difficult to play against.

“That comes down to how hard we work, our competitive mindset, our response to situations and so that’ll be the focus, are we difficult to break down and are we then creating opportunities and taking care of the ball when we do have possession?

“The focus will be doing that at a higher level.”

London City Lionesses will go into this evening’s match with plenty of confidence after defeating promotion-hopefuls Leicester City 4-1 in their latest FA Women’s Championship fixture at the weekend. Regardless of that morale-boosting victory, Phillips knows just how difficult facing Arsenal will be.

She added “I’m sure it’ll be a tough game and it will be an opportunity for them to grow their attacking repertoire.

“Again, the focus will be upon how we will counteract some of their attacking movement.”

London City Lionesses’ FA Women’s Continental League Cup fixture against Arsenal kicks-off at 7.30pm this evening with highlights likely to be made available on the FA Player.
