PREVIEW: London City Lionesses v Chelsea

Chelsea will be hoping to continue their perfect record in this season’s FA Women’s Continental League Cup when they face London City Lionesses at Princes Park on Wednesday evening.

The Blues have defeated both Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur in this season’s competition so far and the group leaders now face second tier opposition in London City Lionesses.

The home side have not played a competitive match since they were defeated 4-0 by Arsenal in their last group fixture a fortnight ago. Melissa Phillips’ side were left frustrated at the weekend after their FA Women’s Championship match at neighbours Charlton Athletic was washed out.

With the league now being the priority for The Pride, head coach Phillips could shuffle her pack for the Chelsea fixture. Conceding early goals has been a feature of London City Lionesses’ performances in their FA Women’s Continental League Cup group so far and Phillips will be hoping to see her side become a little harder to beat against their latest opponents.

Chelsea manager Emma Hayes could make wholesale changes to her side after The Blues drew 1-1 at Arsenal in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League at the weekend. Goalkeeper Carly Telford could be in-line for a start while Maria Thorisdottir, Guro Reiten, Jessie Fleming, Jess Carter, Sam Kerr and Niamh Charles may also be considered for recalls. The South West Londoners will continue to be without injured trio Hannah Blundell, Drew Spence and Fran Kirby.

London City Lionesses’ FA Women’s Continental League Cup fixture against Chelsea is scheduled to kick-off at 7.30pm on Wednesday evening and will be available to stream live on the Chelsea official Facebook page, official YouTube channel and on the 5th Stand app.
