Manchester City forward nets milestone goal in victory in Gothenburg

Manchester City forward Georgia Stanway netted her 50th goal for the club as they came from behind to defeat Goteborg 2-1 this afternoon.

The 21-year-old scored City’s first goal as Gareth Taylor’s side went on to record a one-goal advantage from the first leg of their UEFA Women’s Champions League round of 32 tie in Sweden.

Goteborg made a flying start at Valhalla IP and they stunned City when they established a second-minute lead. Pauline Hammarlund’s initial shot was saved by Ellie Roebuck but Vilde Boa Risa fired the loose ball home.

City responded well to their early setback and both Stanway and Caroline Weir had the Goteborg woodwork rattling as Taylor’s side searched for a way back into the match.

Stanway soon saw another effort strike the woodwork but this time, the ball would nestle in the back of the hosts’ net.

City completed the turnaround in the second half when Weir delivered a cross onto the head of fellow midfielder Sam Mewis and the United States international powered the ball home to give her side a 2-1 lead.

Head coach Taylor will be hoping that his side can now complete the job when the two sides meet in the return leg at The Academy Stadium next Wednesday with a place in the round of 16 being the prize for the winners.
