Crystal Palace qualify for Conti Cup quarter-finals as a best runner-up

Crystal Palace have become the third FA Women’s Championship club to qualify for the quarter-finals of this season’s FA Women’s Continental League Cup with The Eagles securing their passage to the last eight as one of the best group runners-up.

Dean Davenport’s side ended their group campaign behind group winners Bristol City but their six-point return, combined with their points-per-game and goal difference averages have proved better than those records held by three other clubs rivalling them for a best runners-up spot.

Crystal Palace completed their group fixtures last month as they defeated London Bees 6-1 at Hayes Lane but they have been made to wait for their quarter-final place to be confirmed with Birmingham City’s fixture against Leicester City and Everton’s clash with Manchester United having to be played out at later dates following recent postponements. Birmingham City’s penalty shootout defeat to Leicester City a week ago meant that Palace would be through providing that Everton did not beat Manchester United by a huge scoreline this evening. The Blues Girls could only defeat United by a single goal, handing qualification to second tier club Palace.

Davenport’s side join fellow FA Women’s Championship clubs Leicester City and Durham in the quarter-finals of the FA Women’s Continental League Cup. Palace have qualified from the group stage for the very first time in their history.

Further details on Palace’s potential quarter-final opponents will be revealed in due course. The Eagles may need to wait until the New Year for the quarter-final draw to be made with two group matches yet to be played, although neither will have an impact on those sides who make up the last eight.
