Chelsea’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixture against Tottenham Hotspur is the latest match to be postponed this weekend.
West Ham United’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixture against Aston Villa at The Chigwell Construction Stadium and Crystal Palace’s FA Women’s Championship match against Charlton Athletic at Hayes Lane were called off yesterday and Chelsea’s game with Spurs now becomes the third casualty of the weekend.
The Blues released a statement on their official club website earlier this afternoon after several club employees returned positive COVID-19 tests from the latest round of testing. Sunday’s fixture against Spurs has therefore been postponed on safety grounds with a new date for the fixture set to be announced in due course.
Chelsea welcomed fans back to Kingsmeadow for the first time in nine months less than a fortnight ago after being given the green light to admit a limited number of socially distanced fans. London and the surrounding areas have since entered Tier 3 of the UK Government’s winter plan to combat the Coronavirus pandemic meaning that the club’s games have reverted to being played behind-closed-doors.
Emma Hayes’ side defeated Benfica 3-0 in the second leg of their UEFA Women’s Champions League round of 32 tie without fans present at Kingsmeadow in midweek while tomorrow’s fixture against Spurs would have also been played without fans had it gone ahead.
Chelsea will return to Barclays FA Women’s Super League action on 10 January 2021 when they travel to Reading while Spurs will host Birmingham City on the same day.
