Leicester City will be playing Barclays FA Women’s Super League football next season after a 2-0 victory over London City Lionesses at Farley Way this afternoon confirmed their promotion.
The Foxes went into the match knowing that a point would virtually secure their promotion given their superior goal difference over second-placed side Durham but they went one step further and collected all three points.
Leicester City will have been weary of the threat of London City Lionesses going into the game with the Dartford-based outfit being the only side to defeat them in the FA Women’s Championship this season. Jonathan Morgan’s side lost 4-1 in the reverse fixture at Princes Park in November.
The Foxes put in a professional performance in Quorn this afternoon as they got revenge on the Lionesses, securing their place as a top flight club in the process. Sam Tierney and Natasha Flint got the goals for Morgan’s side in a 2-0 win.
Leicester City now move eight points clear of second-placed side Durham with two games to go. The Wildcats put up a brave fight for promotion until the final few games and they should be proud of their efforts in running a full-time Leicester City side close.
Morgan’s Leicester City will complete their promotion-winning campaign with fixtures against Lewes and Charlton Athletic.
