PREVIEW: Birmingham City v Aston Villa

Birmingham City and Aston Villa will both be hoping to move closer to Barclays FA Women’s Super League safety when the pair contest their Second City derby at the SportNation.bet Stadium on Wednesday evening.

The Blues are two points above bottom club Bristol City while Villa are level on points with The Robins and are only outside of the relegation zone on goal difference.

Birmingham City boss Carla Ward is working with reduced squad numbers ahead of the fixture with only 11 players having been in training today. Defender Gemma Lawley missed Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Reading through injury while Heidi Logan, Connie Scofield, Lily Simkin and Abbi Grant were again also absent from the squad.

Aston Villa interim manager Marcus Bignot returns to his former club with his current side having drawn their last two games. Bignot believes that his side are making progress and he could keep faith with the XI that drew 2-2 with Bristol City at The Banks’s Stadium on Saturday.

It was the blue side of the city who won the reverse fixture with Birmingham City coming out 1-0 victors at Villa Park in November thanks to a late Claudia Walker strike. Villa will be hoping for revenge in Solihull in the latest instalment of the Second City derby.

The Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixture between Birmingham City and Aston Villa is scheduled to kick-off at 7pm on Wednesday evening and will be available for fans to stream live on the FA Player.
