FA Women’s Championship strugglers Lewes have announced that manager Fran Alonso has resigned with the Spaniard taking up the position of first team manager at Celtic Women.
Alonso had been in charge for 13 months at The Dripping Pan, overseeing a transformation with the club bringing in a mix of international stars and talented young players.
The former Everton assistant and Southampton technical coach leaves Lewes just two points above the relegation zone in the FA Women’s Championship table while the club are winless in 11 matches in all competitions, although that sequence is not what some of their performances have merited.
Alonso has shown great dedication to the cause during his time with Lewes but found the challenge which was offered to him by a Celtic side who are switching to becoming a full-time operation this season too big to turn down.

Celtic and Alonso will head to Spain for a pre-season training camp later this month ahead of their first domestic fixture which is expected to take place on 9 February.
The Glasgow giants are planning to lead the way with the development of women’s football in Scotland and the club are ready to back new boss Alonso on all fronts as they look to dominate the domestic game and feature in European competition in the years to come.
Alonso’s assistant Simon Parker will take charge of Lewes on an interim basis.
