Arsenal manager Joe Montemurro has challenged his side to ‘right the wrongs’ when The Gunners take on London rivals Chelsea in the FA Women’s Continental League Cup final at The City Ground in Nottingham on Saturday evening.
The North Londoners have suffered defeats to Emma Hayes’ Blues in both of their FA Women’s Super League fixtures this season, two results which have severely dented their hopes of retaining the league title.
Dutch midfielder Danielle van de Donk’s early goal gave Arsenal the lead at Chelsea back in October but two second half goals from The Blues saw the game turn on it’s head. In the return fixture in January, Montemurro’s side were humiliated as Chelsea blew them away on their own ground, the South East Londoners ending the match emphatic 4-1 winners.
When speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of this weekend’s showpiece in the East Midlands, Montemurro has said that the FA Women’s Continental League Cup final is a great opportunity to get revenge on opponents Chelsea.
“There’s always a motivation, especially in these big games” Montemurro told official Arsenal media sources.
“Obviously the other team we’re playing against have unfortunately beaten us twice this year, so it’s a great opportunity to right the wrongs.”
Arsenal are aiming to win the competition for the sixth time in it’s nine-year history and manager Montemurro is relishing the opportunity to compete for domestic silverware once more.
He added “We love our cup finals. It’s what we play for and it’s what we enjoy in the season.
“It’s what being a professional footballer and being in the professional game is all about.
“It’s another opportunity to showcase two fantastic teams and another opportunity to play some great football on a great stage.”
