The Barclays FA Women’s Super League are rolling back the years again this afternoon with a re-run of Chelsea’s FA Women’s Super League 1 fixture against Everton at Wheatsheaf Park.
Their coverage takes us back to the 2012 campaign, Chelsea’s second season in the FA Women’s Super League 1.
Ahead of this afternoon’s re-run, we provide a preview of the fixture, a match which is well worth watching again.
Chelsea’s first season in the top flight saw them finish in sixth position, a considerable distance ahead of the two sides below them in the league table, Doncaster Rovers Belles and Liverpool.
The Blues, who were managed by now West Ham United boss Matt Beard, started their 2012 campaign with a 3-1 home victory over Doncaster Rovers Belles. Chelsea were winless in the three games which followed prior to their meeting with Everton at Wheatsheaf Park in Staines, a game which will be screened again this afternoon.
Drew Spence is the only player to have been with Chelsea from that day right up until present day while goalkeeper Carly Telford and midfielder Sophie Ingle were members of The Blues squad in 2012 before leaving the club and returning for further spells.
The Everton squad in 2012 included a number of bright young talents. Defenders Lucy Bronze and Alex Greenwood were on the club’s books along with forwards Toni Duggan and Nikita Parris. Midfield duo Fara Williams and Jill Scott were also notable members of Mo Marley’s Everton squad.
The Blue Girls had started the 2012 campaign with a 3-2 defeat at Arsenal before battling to a goalless home draw with Birmingham City. Everton got their first league victory of the season at the third attempt by beating Notts County 1-0 at The Marine Travel Arena in Crosby.
This afternoon’s re-run of Chelsea and Everton’s FA Women’s Super League 1 fixture will be screened on the Barclays FA Women’s Super League’s official Facebook page at 3pm.
