REWIND: Ruthless Arsenal begin new season with Liverpool demolition

Arsenal began their 2018/2019 title-winning campaign with a 5-0 demolition of Liverpool at Meadow Park.

We look back on that sunny day in Boreham Wood when Joe Montemurro’s side got off to a flyer against Neil Redfearn’s new-look Reds.

It took Arsenal just six minutes to break the deadlock against a Liverpool side which contained no less than seven league debutants. Katie McCabe put in a cross from the left and Dutch international striker Vivianne Miedema fired the ball home at the second attempt.

It was soon 2-0 to The Gunners when Miedema unselfishly played the ball back across goal for Lisa Evans to score from eight yards.

Arsenal netted their third goal 10 minutes before the break when Kim Little played a neat one-two with Miedema before striking the ball home.

An exceptional first half performance from the home side was capped-off with a fourth goal. Evans played the ball across to Miedema who was completely unmarked and despite making a mess of her shot, she still found the back of the net.

The day was all about the quality of Miedema and she lashed in a fifth goal from an indirect free-kick in the second half to complete her hat-trick to go with her two first half assists.

Miedema’s treble was the first scored by an Arsenal player in almost five years. It was a sign of what was to come with the striker set for a sensational campaign which would end with an FA Women’s Super League winners’ medal.
