Rose Lavelle signs for Manchester City

FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019 winner Rose Lavelle has become the second United States national team player to sign for Manchester City, according to reports on the club’s official website.

She follows former North Carolina Courage midfielder Sam Mewis in making the move to The Cityzens.

Lavelle had recently had her National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) rights acquired from Washington Spirit by rivals OL Reign which seemingly freed her up to make the move to England.

Speaking about the transfer, Lavelle told Manchester City’s official media sources “I’m so excited to join Manchester City and I can’t wait to play alongside some really talented players.

“I’m looking forward to the opportunity of playing in England and competing in the Champions League.”

The player then went on to discuss how City boss Taylor helped convince her to make the switch by saying “After talking with Gareth [Taylor] about the team and how he saw me fitting in, it seemed like a great environment that would really push and develop me as a player.

“I’ve heard amazing things about the Club and it just felt like a really good fit overall.

“I want to challenge myself and feel that Manchester City is the perfect environment to do so and hopefully, I’ll find some success along the way.”

The attacking midfielder has made 45 senior appearances for The Stars and Stripes, scoring 12 goals, none more crucial than the second goal in the FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019 final which saw her team seal back-to-back FIFA Women’s World Cup trophies. Lavelle also earned herself the Bronze Ball award at the tournament, recognising her as the third best player in the competition behind only Megan Rapinoe and Lucy Bronze.

It is understood that Lavelle has joined City on a permanent basis for one-year with the option to extend by a further year. The 25-year-old will be wearing the number 21 shirt for Taylor’s side.

Lavelle is City’s third signing of the summer thus far with the aforementioned Mewis and former Everton forward Chloe Kelly having also joined the club.
