Tottenham Hotspur have announced that long-serving midfielder Josie Green will captain the side in the coming season according to reports on the club’s official website.
The 27-year-old has been on Spurs’ books for the last four years and she has played a vice-captain role to previous club captain Jenna Schillaci.
With veteran defender Schillaci having made the decision to hang up her boots this summer, the captain’s armband has been left vacant. Given midfielder Green’s excellent record as a Spurs player, the club have made the decision to promote her into the captain’s role.
Green started her career with Watford before joining Spurs in 2016. The player was a member of the club’s quadruple-winning side in her first season in North London while Green was instrumental in Spurs’ promotion to the Barclays FA Women’s Super League in 2018/2019.
With Spurs becoming a top flight club for the very first time in their history last season, the pressure was on midfielder Green to personally make a successful transition. The player succeeded in going professional, featuring in 14 of Spurs’ 15 Barclays FA Women’s Super League matches as the club recorded a solid mid-table finish.
Spurs return to Barclays FA Women’s Super League action against West Ham United at The Hive on 6 September.
