Chelsea won the first FA Women’s Community Shield match in 12 years yesterday at they defeated Barclays FA Women’s Super League title rivals Manchester City 2-0 at Wembley Stadium.
With the game goalless after a little over an hour, the turning point came when Manchester City midfielder Jill Scott was dismissed following a second bookable offence. Chelsea went on to dominate the last 28 minutes of the match with Millie Bright and Erin Cuthbert netting the goals to hand them the silverware.
Chelsea are now the holders of three domestic trophies, the Barclays FA Women’s Super League, FA Women’s Continental League Cup and FA Women’s Community Shield. They could yet add the fourth and final domestic piece of silverware to their collection with the 2019/2020 Women’s FA Cup set to be concluded this autumn.
With manager Emma Hayes having added some top class talent to what was already an exceptional squad over the course of the summer, Chelsea are now very much the envy of the women’s game. Love them or loathe them, nobody can deny the fact that The Blues have the potential to become the greatest footballing force that we have ever seen in this country.
After beginning their 2020/2021 campaign by lifting the FA Women’s Community Shield, here are the Twitter reactions of several members of the Chelsea team.
