Young forward promoted to Sheffield United first team squad

Sheffield United academy graduate Charley Docherty has been promoted to the first team squad ahead of the 2020/2021 FA Women Championship season according to reports on The Blades’ official website.

Docherty spent three seasons in Sheffield United’s Regional Talent Centre (RTC) after joining the club in 2016 before progressing to the Development Squad. Docherty, who can play as either a winger or a number 10, had formerly been a part of the Sheffield Wednesday academy before making the switch to The Blades.

After learning of her promotion, Docherty told Sheffield United’s official media channels “Being in such a great environment and around fantastic people at Sheffield United, I am thrilled to be offered a place in the Sheffield United Women’s squad for the new season and I am driven to play for the first team.”

Docherty faces a huge challenge ahead of her if she is to break into the first team this season with the likes of Mel Johnson, Katie Wilkinson and Jade Pennock on the club’s books. United boast the three top scorers from last season’s FA Women’s Championship therefore the youngster has a mountain to climb if she wants to usurp any of them.

The Blades will be looking to make a push for the FA Women’s Championship title this season having just narrowly missed out last time round. With the appointment of experienced manager Neil Redfearn, it is clear that their sights are firmly set on promotion. Sheffield United open the 2020/2021 campaign on Sunday against potential title rivals London City Lionesses at Princes Park.
