Former Aston Villa captain joins Blackburn Rovers

Former Aston Villa captain Jade Richards has joined FA Women’s Championship club Blackburn Rovers according to reports on the club’s official website.

The 27-year-old was one of eight players to be released by Villa at the end of last season following their promotion to the Barclays FA Women’s Super League.

It has this evening been announced that Richards has agreed to move to Blackburn Rovers. The defender will wear the number six shirt for Gemma Donnelly’s side and she could appear for the club in their 2020/2021 FA Women’s Championship season opener at Leicester City tomorrow, although Rovers have not indicated whether the player has been registered in time.

Richards made just four FA Women’s Championship appearances for former club Aston Villa last season, but the club kept clean sheets in three of those matches.  The player was an unused substitute as Villa defeated Blackburn Rovers at their former home of the Trevor Brown Memorial Ground last September.

Prior to Richards’ struggle for game time at Villa, the player featured in every league game for the club in 2019/2020. The defender will play a significant part in new club Rovers improving their defensive record this season after conceding more than two goals per game on average in their first year in the FA Women’s Championship.
