England international full-back Lucy Bronze has completed her return to Barclays FA Women’s Super League club Manchester City.
The 28-year-old returns to The Academy Stadium after three years away in which she won a UEFA Women’s Champions League treble with reigning European champions Lyon.
Manchester City’s official media sources confirmed Bronze’s return earlier today after weeks of speculation over her future. The player has reportedly signed an initial two-year deal with City while she moves to The Academy Stadium on a free transfer following the expiry of her contract with former club Lyon.
Bronze initially joined City back in 2014 with back-to-back FA Women’s Super League 1 titles under her belt from her time with former club Liverpool. Two years later, Bronze was crowned FA Women’s Super League 1 Player of the Year. Between 2016 and 2017, the defender was a member of a City side which had every domestic trophy in their grasp while the club made a first appearance in the semi-finals of the UEFA Women’s Champions League.
Leaving City in 2017 was a big decision for Bronze but it proved to be the right one as she went on to collect that fascinating trio of UEFA Women’s Champions League winners-medals, something which may never be achieved by an English player ever again.
Bronze’s return to Manchester City sees the player challenged with helping the club regain domestic dominance while her European experience with Lyon should surely be a huge benefit to Gareth Taylor’s side as they look to impress in this season’s UEFA Women’s Champions League.
