Midfielder Jill Roord has continued her astonishing recent goalscoring form with the only goal for The Netherlands in their 1-0 victory over Russia in Moscow this afternoon.
The 23-year-old has started the domestic campaign with back-to-back hat-tricks for her club in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League and she added another goal to her tally for her country, leaving The Netherlands on the verge of qualification for the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022.
The pre-match focus was on the Dutch’s all-time record goalscorer Vivianne Miedema who had the opportunity to net her 70th goal for her country at senior level but it was Arsenal teammate Roord who grabbed the headlines with a lovely strike.
Roord’s goal came after just 16 minutes at the Sapsan Arena. The midfielder cut in from the left and curled a sublime effort into the far corner of the Russian net after being assisted by another Arsenal teammate in Danielle van de Donk. Roord had an opportunity to double both hers and her country’s goal tally late in the first half but she saw her shot saved by Tatyana Shcherback.
The Dutch had plenty of further opportunities to increase their lead. They couldn’t take advantage but it didn’t matter with Sarina Wiegman’s side now just three points away from qualification.
