Chelsea hotshot Harder nets double UEFA player accolade

Chelsea’s Pernille Harder has today been crowned the UEFA Player of the Year and the UEFA Women’s Champions League Forward of the Season for 2019/2020 by European football’s governing body.

The 27-year-old Danish international earned her double award during her time at former club VfL Wolfsburg by helping the She-Wolves to a domestic double and to an appearance in the UEFA Women’s Champions League final in August.

Harder bagged an astonishing 29 goals in domestic competitions for the German champions including no less than four hat-tricks in FLYERALARM Frauen-Bundesliga fixtures against USV Jena, SC Freiburg, Bayer Leverkusen and SC Sand. The player averaged 1.29 goals per game in the league, finishing nine goals clear at the top of the goalscoring charts.

The forward has won the UEFA Player of the Year award for the second time in just three years with Harder having also received the accolade in 2017/2018. The UEFA 2019/2020 award winners were announced on their official website.

In the UEFA Women’s Champions League, Harder helped herself to nine goals including a treble against Mitrovica of Kosovo in the last-32 and a quadruple against Glasgow City in the quarter-finals. The striker captained VfL Wolfsburg in her farewell appearance in the final against Lyon as the French club went on to lift the trophy. Despite not ending the tournament with a winners’ medal, Harder was voted best forward in the 2019/2020 competition, receiving the UEFA Women’s Champions League Forward of the Season award.

Harder’s Chelsea career has produced one goal in two substitute appearances. She will be hoping to make her full debut at Birmingham City this weekend.
