Dominant Spurs record first win of the season over London City Lionesses in Conti Cup

A dominant Tottenham Hotspur side have secured their first win of the season, defeating London City Lionesses 4-0 in their opening group match in the FA Women’s Continental League Cup this afternoon.

Both sides made three changes from their last respective outings with the visitors bringing in Chantelle Mackie and Annie Rossiter and handing a debut to Lilly Pursey. Spurs brought in Ashleigh Neville, Hannah Godfrey and Rosella Ayane.
It took Spurs just 12 minutes to score their first goal as Ria Percival turned in Ayane’s cross. Four minutes later, London City Lionesses hit the bar through a shot from Alli Murphy as they looked to make the most of their limited possession.
Spurs scored their second goal in the 29th minute, finally making their possession pay off. Percival was bought down just outside the area and Alanna Kennedy scored her first goal for Tottenham Hotspur with a low free-kick. The North Londoners remained dominant and Ayane scored the third after an incisive through ball from Kit Graham.
Just before the break, the visitors had a rare opportunity to reduce the arrears but Kallie Balfour shot straight at Becky Spencer in the Spurs goal.
Spurs made four changes at half-time and their second half display was not as dominant, though London City Lionesses rarely troubled Spencer with most of their chances going wide.
Lucia Leon had two chances for the home side and should have scored at least once but she couldn’t find the target on either occasion.  In the 82nd minute, Angela Addison finally made it 4-0 to Spurs as she got on the end of a cross swung in from the right wing by Neville.
The result will please Spurs’ joint-managers Karen Hills and Juan Amoros with four goals having been scored by four different players and a clean sheet having been recorded. The North Londoners will now look towards facing Manchester United in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League on Saturday.
London City Lionesses will not be surprised by the result but they can take positives from some of their play including some great tackles by Poppy Wilson in the centre of the park to dispossess Spurs. Lisa Fallon’s side host London Bees in their next match on Sunday.
